Little Foodies Spain and the annual Jamon

If the in-laws are coming over from Spain and it's near Christmas they usually bring a leg of jamon serrano (mountain ham). Not wishing to bleat on but having been in bed I hadn't seen this years and not willing to negotiate the war zone that is our utility room floor this is all that I can see of it (at the moment). It's also all that you can see of it too. Now that I'm up and about (yippeee!) with only sciatic pain for company (still yippeee - drugs are marvellous!) I can't wait to start doing things with it. I have tasted it, the other day while in bed, hubby brought me a plate of it ever so thinly sliced. It was delicious!

At the moment the jamon is placed on top of the tumble drier which is on top of the washing maching. It makes the room quite warm if either one is switched on, and exceptionally hot if they're both on at the same time, so I do hope someone remembers to remove it before either appliance is next used. It would be a real shame to have to sit and eat the lot in one go. That would be too much even for us.

You have various grades or should I say quality of jamon serrano from the cheap, actually it's never cheap but shall we say more reasonable (which can leave a nasty after taste!) to the very expensive (which leaves the sort of taste in your mouth you'd possibly kill for!). This Christmas just gone you could have purchased some beautiful Jamon from Brindisa in London, starting at £165.oo up to £850.00.

You can click here to read a bit more about jamon. The best and my favourite jamon serrano has always been eaten in Andalucia, (Ssh! don't tell the in-laws). If you've never tried it, then do if you get the chance as it's seriously good stuff!

Oh my . . . glad to hear you can now negotiate the world of the upright again.
We came so close to buying one of those hams when we set sail across the Atlantic from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean. But we would have had to hang it in the salon and were afraid it would swing and smell which are often not a good thing on the high seas in a 57 ft sail boat.
But it is really really good and it's really expensive!

Now the serrano ham is posh! I envy you.
If that doesn't make you feel a little better then nothing will!

Hi Lydia, thank you - it made me laugh that I was taking photographs of it perched on top too.

Hi Asha, thank you Asha. You'd love it I'm sure.

Hi Tanna, negotiating being the right word. I think you probably chose the right thing on your Atlantic crossing, though I'm sure it would have been a very fine thing to eat at sea. You're right about the cost I found the price tag on ours, just under 300 Euros. Astrabloodynomical if you ask me!

Hi Cynthia, it was a pleasure meeting you too. It would be lovely to meet up in Barbados or in the delightful rain sodden UK of course!

Hi Canary, thanks for stopping by. Happy New Year to you too.

Hi Karen, yes not sure diet vibes ever really take a full hold of me!

Hi Gemma, hope you're feeling better soon. We are very lucky to do the whole jamon thing.

Hi Margaret, I guess it is a bit of luxury. We're very spoiled!

Thank you all for your comments

Amanda I am so glad that you are feeling somewhat better. Now be sure you don't overdo it and end up back on your back again! I loved learnign a bit more about the Jamon. I do love this ham. Especially with some sliced melon. You're very lucky to be gifted with this every Christmas!

Hi David, I don't think green is your colour! We are really lucky to receive a whole one I know and this year it is a particularly good one.

Hi CC, possibly, but as I took it I think I'll say no. tee hee!

Hi Nora, your comment made me laugh out loud which is not good. As we're friends I know that you wouldn't have meant terrific that I'm not up and about, especially as I am. Albeit today I look like a 90 year old walking around.

Hi Marie, I was going to be really good and write a load of stuff about jamon but then thought I'd just link to that trusty (sometimes not so) wikipedia.

Thank you for your comments.

Jamon Jabugo de Iberia - the ham to die for...and kill for (not really either but it is soooo good all the others pale in comparison)
I may have to drive to southern Spain just to have a slice. It would be worth it.
Oh, LUCKY YOU!

Hello JL, thanks for your comment. I do realise - honest I promise ;) - but at the time I had a torn and slipped disc so as much as I liked eating it I didn't really care what else was going on.
