Little Foodies Veg Patch

It's been a while since I posted about the veg patch. Yesterday, Hubby picked 4 tiny strawberries from the hanging baskets and dutifully handed them over to Little and Small, they were gone in seconds. I don't think there will be any more and I think four in one go is a record as during the traditional picking and eating period we only seemed to get one or two a day.

The following pictures are of chillies grown in the garden, harvested last week. We thought at one point they wouldn't ever grow or ripen and that it would be another waste. However we were wrong, they grew and they grew very well. The red ones are fiercely hot, these have not been handed to the children to eat raw.

Thanks (infact very big thanks) to my husband I have a new macro lense. Need to play a bit as the pics are a little blurred. My hands shake when I take pics so should start using the tripod, the macro lense doesn't seem so forgiving as the old one.) Thank you darling, I do know that it was for you, aswell as for me though!!! ;) xx

What are we up to this weekend... Dressing the house for Halloween, we wont be going for it in the same way as our friends across the pond but we'll do our bit and... having a little tea party for Great Nanny.

Peppers sound dangerous in a soap.

Well done Amanda!

Our chilli plants were eaten by slugs so I am having to buy them this year :(

I wish I had space for a little garden. I'd like to grow some herbs, maybe some tomatoes.

Sounds like a great weekend Amanda, and fabulous photos of your chilies! We've never done well with growing vegetables in our garden. I think the soil must be too poor or something.

Hi Amanda - a good crop of chillies. Can you store them in any way? I've thought about having a go at growing them but find a 'crop of chillies' quite daunting.

Sorry for taking over the comments, Margaret you can either freeze chilli peppers or dry them. To dry just thread a needle with some cotton thread and sew them and hang in a dry place, Airing cupboard.

Hi Amanda, I envy your chillies. I only get once or two chillies each time from my skinny chili plant.

As for chili and punishment - When I was working in the child abuse prevention team back in Singapore, we discovered that some parents were making their kids eat chili or rub chillies on their hands as punishment. Cruel stuff.

Have fun with your macro lense! And what goodies will you have at this tea party with Great Nanny?

Hi Tanna, it was really good fun. Peppers in soap would be really dangerous and the lens - it's great.

Hi Fiona, I was amazed!

Hi Asha, I do hope so. Happy Halloween too and you're never too old for candies, she'll change her mind.

Hi Kelly, it is really nice to be able to go and pick something from the garden to eat.

Hi CC, thank you!!

Hi Derborah, it is really satisfying and great fun for the children.

Hi Angel, thank you.

Hi Jeena, thank you.

Hi Kate, the chillies have done much better than the strawberries.

Hi Aimee, thank you. Put it at the very top of all Christmas lists!

Hi Cynthia, he's good like that!

Hi Marie, that's a shame but at least you can use things grown for the main house. I don't suppose you can just take that home though.

Hi Kelly-Jane, thank you!

Hi Katiez, thank you, I love chillies too.

Hi Pat, thanks for your first and second comment. I would have suggested making chilli oil, my cousin suggested freezing them yesterday. I looked up making chilli oil with fresh chillies though and found there are all sorts of problems that can occur with botchulism, etc.

Hi Margaret, Pat's suggestions of drying or freezing them seem to be the best, safest.

Hi Nora, that's terrible, people can be so cruel. How anybody could do something like that to a child is beyond me. As a child I remember hearing grown ups saying that they'd put a bar of soap in the mouth of children who said bad words. I never had it done but the threat of it was pretty scary! I expect you saw some pretty atrocious stuff. All credit to you for doing such a job. I don't think I'd be strong enough.

Thank you for all of your comments.

p.s. Nora, I took the line out about chillies as I didn't like the thought of people putting chillies on children or making them eat them.

Hi Amanda - I came back to the comments to look for the answer to my question.
Thank you Pat.

We just managed to dig up 5lbs of potatoes, found hiding in a bed we'd forgotten about. Talk about hidden treasure! There is nothing more divine than eating ones own food. I was thinking of trying to grow some Poblano chillis next year, as we're (I'm) not overly keen on the inordinately hot ones (wuss!).

Aren't macro lenses fun? My 35mm SLR came with a selection of lenses, and I love playing. You're taking wonderful photos - you've obviously got the hang of it!
