Giblets - Cheap Chicken Livers

Do you hate liver? I'm not that fond of it, or atleast that's what I thought. The other Sunday Hubs went off to do the shopping, we'd missed the butcher and being sensible they close on a Sunday. Supermarket bound he returned with liver. "Thanks a lot for just thinking about yourself!" I was actually really cross. I really didn't want liver. Anyway he cooked it with bacon, onions and amazing gravy (I do love the gravy you get from cooking with liver and bacon). I also love mashed potato and to make up for the liver he'd made a lot of mash, he even used the daft ricer thing for perfect mash. I can never be bothered, preferring a good old masher. So we ate our liver and bacon and the boys loved it. Little and Small actually kept going back for more...

This last weekend, Hubs wanted to do roast lamb with proper gravy, he wanted liver again too but the butcher said they don't do fresh chicken livers, only frozen ones. Lateral thinking struck and he bought 5 bags of giblets for .20p per bag. This meant the sort of gravy Hubs likes, gravy granules are not for him... (though I'm a guilty user sometimes.) It also gave him chicken livers.

Pan Fried Chicken Livers
He pan fried the chicken livers with olive oil, garlic, rosemary, salt, pepper and worcester sauce. Only cooked for a few minutes - think cooking scallops amount of time. We had them as a little tapa. I LOVED THEM, the boys loved them, we literally fought over the bowl. Now what is that all about - as I said I don't even like liver?!

At 37, I'm a liver loving convert!

That is too funny Amanda. I've always loved liver.

I LOVE liver - and, since you're a convert, here's the link to a really delicious spiced chicken liver dish, one of my favourites, which, now I come to think of it, we haven't had for ages ...

But I can't get my children to eat liver in any form, so yours are brilliant

Hi Tanna, I've always felt the opposite about it - until now. Great recipe you e-mailed - Thank you.

Hi Joanna, thank you for the recipe link. I'm quite shocked they like liver but then again they're very fond of some weird looking fish and shellfish. I can't take the credit for them liking liver - all down to the lovely husband.

Thank you for your comments.

I'm all with you on the liver hating part! But... I've discovered I love non-political correct goose liver, and have eaten duck livers (the last completely unintentional in France, mixed up the words and didn't know what I was eating). So maybe I have to try again? Shiver..

Hi Amanda, thanks for visiting my blog. The boys are getting so big!! I don't much care for liver either. I do try, but I just can't like it. I do cook it sometimes for Brian when I think of buying it. Which isn't very often.

I do love them. My husband is somewhat of a convert. I like to add them to spaghetti sauces and stuffing.

Hi Amanda

So many people in the UK think that offal is awful.

Cooked gently liver can be such a treat, a real melt in the mouth delicacy.

Calves liver with Puy lentils is the one dish that I often think about from years of great meals in Soho.

Your sons are so lucky to have two foodies at the helm of their boat.

Hmm, you've intrigued me! Liver is something I used to hide or give to the dog when my parents tried to make me eat it, so it's not my favorite meat...but I'm super impressed even your kids loved it! I may just have to try this! Glad you're back blogging again!

Chicken liver taste very different from beef liver...at least to me...and I love chicken liver, not so much beef liver, although with enough garlic and onions I'll eat beef liver, too. Glad the kids liked it too!

Amanda, I try to keep an open mind about liver, but still dislike it. Now foie gras is another story...

Next time drop them into boiling water for a few seconds first, drain, wash and refresh in ice-cold water before the quick pan-frying. Just love 'em, but not much call up here in Yorkshire where creativity with cheap produce has yet to catch on. My local farmer gave me two trotters free this morning when I went to pick up some pork and - a classic example of what I'm saying.

ooo, we are the same age!

Have to confess that eating an internal organ really doesn't do it for vegetarian me. I hated liver when I was little, but always loved the smell of mum cooking it...but the trying to get me to eat it dinner table scenes were ugly ;-)
